Tennis racquets
HOW DOES THE TECHNOLOGY WORK?
Tennis racquets were not originally a part of tennis, tennis was originally played with your hands, until the 1300s where paddles were brought into the sport. After paddles were brought in, there were racquets, the racquets generally were made of wood and only had a small circle of stings, which you hit the ball with. From the wooden racquet came the metal racquets in the late 1960’s, which were heavy and hard to swing. The modern day racquets are composite and have a large area with strings so that it is easier to hit it and you can hit the ball harder.
Modern professional racquets are now stringed using polyester. Polyester string is both stiffer and thicker than conventional gut and nylon strings. The result is a unique set of playing characteristics, control. Control means topspin. Topspin is the forward rotation of the ball, imparted by an exaggerated low-to-high swing. The forward rotation disrupts air pressure around the ball, creating a zone of high pressure above the ball and low pressure below. This unequal pressure forces the ball to dip down, allowing players to swing hard, aim higher over the net and still land the ball inside the baseline. This will allow player to hit angles that weren't possible with conventional string.
WHERE WAS THE TECHNOLOGY DISCOVERED/INVENTED?
Tennis racquets were not originally tennis racquets but were actually hands. After two hundred years of using hands in tennis, players discovered that they could use wooden paddles, like today's table tennis racquets but without any rubber. After this the first actual tennis racquets were made in 1874 and created with wood, they had a small area where you could hit the ball with and this made them hard to use.
DOES THE TECHNOLOGY IMPROVE THE SPORT?
Tennis racquets are a technology that improves the performance of playing tennis. Current racquets have a larger area to hit the ball. This hitting area has dramatically increased from the small area of the hands when tennis was first invented. Tennis racquets are also a lot lighter which helps the player to swing faster with the racquet.
HAS THE TECHNOLOGY SPREAD TO OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD?
The modern tennis racquet has spread entirely across the world. This i mainly because it greatly improves the players performance levels and no body wants to disadvantage the opponent because one has a improved tennis racquet.
WHEN IS THIS TECHNOLOGY USED?
Tennis racquets are now always used when playing a game of tennis whether it is for training, recreational or professional. The only time that a tennis player doesn't have a racquet is during recovery from injury. Racquets are one of the most important technology used in the sport of tennis.
